Emergence & Self-Organisation

Join us at Café Complexité on 13 March to chat about emergence and self-organisation!

Emergence happens when small, simple interactions naturally come together to create something bigger and more complex—like how individual policies from different agencies interact to shape the broader policy landscape. Think about how public health, transport, and housing policies combine to create the “big picture” of urban well-being.

Michael Howden will walk us through emergence and self- organisation, sharing real-world examples and leading discussions about how they apply to public servants’ work. We’ll also discuss how high-level properties of systems can’t always be predicted from their smaller parts.

Email us at Chair_in_Complexity_Science@vuw.ac.nz for a calendar invitation and to join our email list.
