Our focus on community

Find out about our engagement activities—bringing the collection to the wider community through workshops and exhibitions.

Bringing the Chinese heritage types back into action offers an unprecedented opportunity for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington to help link past with present, language with culture, scholars with communities.

The Voice of Kaishu: A typographic journey

We celebrated the kaishu font—the voice of the mid-century New Zealand Chinese community—with an exhibition, film screening, workshop, and other activities.

Type cleaning workshops

If you enjoy the meditative process of organising things, join us for one of our weekly working bees to clean and organise heritage letterpress types.

Excerpted detail of the first Wellington Bamboo Branch Songs published in the Chinese Growers Journal (vol 13, no.140 Nov-Dec 1967)

Wellington Bamboo Branch Songs: A Crowd Translation project

Explore a little-known poetic genre, the life and work of Lionel Chan, and celebrate the transformation of early NZ Chinese literary heritage into Kiwi English.

Sydney Shep chairs special panel with three speakers

Dragon Tails 2019

Dragon Tails was a Chinese diaspora history and heritage conference where we told the story of our Chinese heritage types to international audiences.
